It covers an area of 19,500 ha on the slopes of the West Balkan ranfe and the Danube valley. Only three hours and about 170 km from Sofia it can be reached through the Petrohan pass or by Hemus highway.
 The terrain is varying, mainly mountainous with it highest point Midzhur peak - (2,168 m) and lowest point (86 m) in the Bozhuritsa country located in the Danube valley. The climate is temperate continental.
Red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, roe deer, wolf, fox and wildcat are the main game species here, The capercaillie inhabits the buffer zone of the "Churpene" biosphere reserve, which is within Game Breeding Station |
